![]() I've found that the biggest problem with the "exe generating slide show programs" is that they only work on Windows. Reasonable cost, no subscription, powerful, and easy to use.įor something a lot more powerful I'm considering Photopia Director to create the kinds of Hollywood-class multimedia shows I used to create decades ago with arrays (12-24) of physical Kodak Ektagraphic projectors driven by an AVL computer. I have and still use Pictures2Exe (PTE) for many years. I think after years the best still "Proshow Producer" I bought few week before the company shut down forever while now is managed from a company that ask a subscription, today I think one of the best is this: You might want to look at the new free Microsoft Video editor This isn't something I'll be using every day or week or for anything commercial, more like one project every few months, just for family and friends. So, what can handle a couple thousand files, provide a decent selection of transitions to work with, and export in a variety of formats, either for free or with a free trial and no more than a $50 perpetual license? I'm not interested in the "subscription" model or other regularly recurring license fees models. The audio editing isn't great, either, but it's better than that, and anyway I can just throw the file into my DAW to work out a soundtrack more precisely.īut those gripes would be mostly forgivable if I could get usable video to export reliably, instead of only for a couple weeks until Windows updates break it again. Having used a couple other programs of theirs I get the impression they're about quantity over quality-there are a lot of dumb decisions in the user interface and experience, and inadequate documentation.Īnother gripe is that Photostage seems to be incapable of specifying photos to show for just one frame, which is dumb in something you're going to use to string lots of pics together into a video. So basically I need something that can actually work with large numbers of mixed format photo and video clips unlike Da Vinci, and more reliable than Photostage.Īnother beef of mine with that program is it seems to rebuild the cache on EVERY SINGLE UNDO, which takes forever, and instead of doing prep work for rendering AFTER you select the format, it forces you to wait for it before you can even specify your output specs, then you gotta wait another 30 minutes for the actual output. (Last time I uninstalled and reinstalled but it did not fix it.) So the only workaround I know of is to transfer the whole project to a new computer, which takes a lot of time as well. But this time, Windows decided to delete my working restore point as well. This has happened twice in the past month, and the first time the only way I could resolve it is to do a system restore. The result is the output is nothing but a green screen with audio. Problem is there's some recurring problem that seems to relate to Windows updating other software without asking me, in spite of my trying to stop this from happening. It gives similar results to apps I've used like Family Album and whatever Sony packages onto their smartphones, and has pretty good capability in the editing stage, though far from perfect. I tried a bunch of "free" or "free trial" programs, and the closest thing I've found so far to what I'm looking for is NCH Photostage. If the culprit is really the format rather than their software being buggy, why doesn't every other program out there also grind to a halt? Supposedly the culprit is one of the H26x formats, but it seems rather mindboggling to me that they haven't solved such a basic problem. I tried Da Vinci Resolve, but it just grinds to a halt once I add a slew of clips, and most attempts at editing also take forever to process, so it's worthless. But on Windows I've had a hard time finding anything usable. On phones numerous apps seem to cover this territory well.
